First of all, the title of attraction is misleading, as some reviewers have noted already. The Dam is just a place from where the trip starts. The attraction is the lake and all connected with it. The limestone rocks are breathtaking – sheer vertical surfaces with hundreds of stone tinges, rocks bare and rocks overgrown with jungle, large rocks and smaller rock islands coming steeply out of clean, greenish water. Have in mind, however, that if you have visited Ngang Pha before going to Cheow Lan, you’ve already seen similar spectacular limestone rocks.
The stop at the rafthouses was very nice too, beautiful views, serene atmosphere, delicious lunch with freshly caught lake fish. There is also a chance to see some wildlife: I managed to spot a pair of langoors coming out of forest at very close distant, though these monkeys are very shy. One of the trip highlights is jungle trekking and a visit to the caves. I did not do the caves, as they do not appeal me much; instead I stayed in jungle and enjoyed two hours of exploring. It was a very pleasantly spent time, besides; it was cool from the shade and stream water and no mosquitoes in dry season. However, there is a warning – even if you choose a trip without going to the caves, you still have to be reasonably fit, as the paths are narrow, sometimes slippery and some climbing on sharp rocks and crossing streams is involved.
