The programme consists of a number of
strategies to ensure the patient’s condition
is optimised at all phases. The programme
includes elements such as reduced fasting,
preoperative carbohydrate loading, avoidance
of mechanical bowel preparation, drains and
nasogastric tubes, goal-directed intra-operative
fluid therapy, shorter incisions, and patient
information and goal setting. It was adopted
as a key clinical quality indicator with an aim
to standardise care through an evidence-based
protocol
