Amsterdam is a walking city. It is not a city to drive around and there are limited and
expensive facilities for motorists. Space for parking is at premium in the city, especially on the
streets, and meters on main canal banks are rarely free in office hours. Most meters are limited
to two hours. Illegally parked cars get clamped or towed away and the drivers will be fined.
Amsterdam’s integrated public transport system, for which Central Station is the focal
point, is efficient and inexpensive. Its tramlines are the most common forms of transport in the
city. Trams start operating at 6 am. on weekdays and slightly later at weekends. They finish
before midnight, when night buses take over
