Michael Moran is a woodworker. For the past 10 years, he’s been running an independent business with his wife Celia. Together, they turn wood into furniture and art. Influenced by traditional Japanese furniture making, Michael approaches his raw materials in a conversational manner. Rather than coming to a one-sided decision on what a particular piece of wood will become, he observes and intuits what the piece wants to be and saves it until an appropriate project comes along. Interestingly, Michael found his way to Japanese styles, through his original American influences.

"Ever since I was a child, I've been a big fan of the Shaker furniture philosophy, and aesthetic," Moran says. "I distinctly remember visiting the preserved Shaker village in Pleasant Hill, KY with my father many times. Each time struck with the simplicity and beauty of the architecture and furniture. As I grew older, it was the philosophy behind it that really drew me in. And, as I found my way into furniture, it was the quality and commitment to the longevity of everything one made that has had a lasting effect on my work.

Another of these childhood trips that had a profound and lasting effect on me was to Gethsemani Abbey, also in Kentucky. This was where Thomas Merton was a monk. It was reading about him that first brought me to Eastern poetry and philosophy. Interestingly, it was the influence of these local and domestic experiences that ultimately led me into traditional Japanese furniture, design and philosophy.”

After passing through Kentucky, Tennessee and Wisconsin, Michael settled in Charleston about seven years ago. Celia joined the business a few years later, after graduating from the Masters program at University College London, and together they have grown their business into a successful venture, allowing for a recent move up to Gallatin, NY. Surrounded by 10 acres of suitable trees, and in closer proximity to a big market for custom furniture, the Morans are starting a new chapter of their lives.

“The move to the Hudson Valley was really a multi-purpose move," Moran says. "We've both wanted to have land to care for, and peace and quiet for many years. We also wanted to again experience the full four seasons and all their beauties and challenges. We love the land and feel of the communities, the proximity to so many different experiences, and from our first visits have felt really at home here. We've been fortunate to do quite a bit of work in NYC as well as around the country and abroad which has given us a much appreciated flexibility in our location. It is great being closer to the city, it's vibrancy, opportunity, and our many close friends that live there. We'll also always be around Charleston, SC where we first started 10 years ago, for many of the same reasons just on a smaller scale.”

Being a woodworker is typically described as quite a solitary profession, but Michael makes sure to root himself in a wider community of creatives.

“We feel pretty lucky to have a quite varied group of friends who bring unique and different perspectives. I do like working on my own and having a pretty significant amount of quiet time and space, however, I highly value the time spent with old friends and new alike. I can't say that I spend a majority of time with any one faction; I have some friends in the art and design world, woodworkers, metal workers, some writers, filmmakers, lawyers, engineers, farmers, dog trainers, pilots, teachers, even a few athletes and coaches sprinkled in there. I really love the variety of perspectives and experiences how each inevitably impacts my own understanding and vision.”

The Morans build bridges between both beauty and functionality, and art and commerce. The majority of their work consists of commissioned pieces, and in that lies a responsibility not taken lightly. Factory-made furniture may last a few years, but the kind of singular hand-made work the Morans produce will last a lifetime. Imagine joining your children for a meal at a dinner table you ate at with your parents. A table with cuts and scrapes that represent childhood stories to share. Imagine that table being built from a tree that your grandfather planted, eventually to be felled by a storm and delivered to a woodworker like Michael to extend the circle of life.
