Research suggests that trip-making behaviour has grown increasingly complex as modern life has become busier and people grow time-poor. Complex trip chains have been said to require flexible travel modes. For this reason research in Sydney Australia has suggested that the private car is preferable to public transport for making complex trips (Hensher and Reyes, 2000). Based on the 1991–1992 Sydney Household Travel Survey, this research found that as trip chains grew more complex, public transport was less likely to be used. This conclusion may have negative implications for public transport ridership in a future involving more complex travel.
