During 1999, the content and delivery of the subject CM was reviewed by the course
team and three principal problems were identified. The first problem acknowledged was
a disappointingly low level of preparedness by students prior to attending tutorials and
workshops. This lack of preparedness was, in turn, closely associated with reduced engagement
by students with the subject material and a lower level of student–staff interaction
during the face-to-face teaching sessions. Second, also largely due to the poor level of
preparedness by students, tutorials were often reduced to one-way content delivery of technical material. This, in turn, limited the ability of staff teaching the subject to create an
interactive and engaging learning environment in which students actively participated in
their own learning. The third problem identified by the course team was a lack of regular
and timely feedback received by students in relation to their learning.
