Bangkok was rocked with tropical rainstorm today for hours causing flooding in many areas and paralyzing traffic on many roads.
Hard hit are Asoke, Ratchada, Sukhumvit where floods were reported to be knee deep.
But hardest was the underground section of the Tops Supermarket located within the Sukhumvit Road branch of the Robinson shopping mall.
Heavy rains which fell during the noon hours have caused flood waters to rush into almost the entire shopping floor causing damage to goods.
The public relations department of the Central Food Retail Ltd. who manages all Tops supermarkets in the country stated that due to heavy rains, many of its branches have been inundated by flood waters.
But it assured its staff have managed to pump out most of the flood waters and all affected branches have temporarily suspended service in order to carry out cleaning and take stocks off the flooded shelves. They expected to resume service by 8.00 am tomorrow.
The Thai Traffic Police Department meanwhile, reports that due to the heavy rains that fell at 12.45 in the afternoon, many roads within the capital are severely congested.
At 3.00 pm late in the afternoon the Bangkok Flood Prevention Center reported that the heaviest rains reported within Bangkok was at Sathorn district recording 37.5 mm of rain fall followed by Suan Benjasiri Park on Sukhumvit Road. Similarly, they also report heavy traffic congestion on many roads.
After the rains subsided, reports came in of four to five connected 3-storey abandoned shop-house buildings having collapsed at the Mahanakorn intersection located on Si Phraya road.
No fatalities or injuries were reported but unfortunately a parked taxi cab was buried under the rubble. It is believed that the deluge had caused huge amounts of rain water to collect on the roofs of the buildings which had overburdened the structure. The building has been deserted for more than 10 years which had apparently weakened the foundations.
