Due to the structure and inherent window pattern not idealized for the lab bench spacing, the cadence between window and bench became unique to the building and a feature of the space. The bench spacing varies from 10-ft-6-in to 10-ft-8-in, playing a thoughtful dance with the windows. Providing an open lab space along the façade allows this flexibility, while the center support zone stays anchored by the structure of the building. The interior support spaces pocketed the columns in a sliver of space that provides closets for gas manifolds. The Kimball Hall structural grid may not have been ideal, but the idiosyncrasies of a non-traditional lab column structure allow for an enduring character that is uniquely part of the building and its occupants.
