Tablet formulations containing effervescent agents resulted in faster
tablet dissolution irrespective of dissolution media (Fig. 3). This was due
to the unique properties of effervescent agents producing carbon dioxide in contact with solvent. Dissolution is an important factor for tablets
used as fruit drinks. A tablet with 1% effervescent agent (EFA) needs
about one and a half hour for dissolution to occur. However, this is
quite unusual for a consumer to wait for that long for a tablet juice.
Hence, dissolution and sensory properties of tablets with higher
amounts of EFA (5, 10, 15, 20%) in mixed fruit and 20% in individual
fruits were investigated (Table 6). Dissolution time decreased drastically with increase in EFA and the lowest dissolution time of 2.24 min was
obtained with the addition of 15% EFA in mixed fruit tablets. Higher
dosage of EFA resulted in faster dissolution of pitaya fruit tablets
(1.71 min) compared to that of guava (2.16 min) and mixed fruit tablets (2.31 min).
