There is no doubt that the periodisation of training and competition works most effectively with athletes from individual sports. These athletes have the opportunity to peak at specific meetings, to compete aggressively at minor competitions without necessarily having to produce a personal best performance or to miss competitions completely if they don't fall within the aims of their overall program. But periodisation is equally necessary for players from team sports. The factors which influence the fluctuations in training volume and intensity however, are often not of the players' choosing, making the task more difficult.
