Bank Negara Indonesia (BNI) is a commercial bank in Indonesia.
It was originally owned and operated by the government.
Bank Negara Indonesia was founded in 1946, just when Indonesia was beginning to seek independence from its former colonizer, the Netherlands.
At the time, it was able to issue currency.
In 1949, when Indonesia became independent, De Javasche Bank became Indonesia's Central Bank - the only bank with the authority to issue money. (De Javasche bank later became Bank Indonesia.)
