Designed by Italian sculptor Corrado Feroci (founder of Silpakorn University; p59), this memorial to the 1932 end of absolutism pointedly sits in a traffic circle interrupting the royal processional avenue. The date infuses the design. Around a sculpted constitution upon a three-metre (ten-foot) tall tray (June was then the third Thai month) are 75 cannons (for year 2475BE) and four vertical wings (24 metres high for 24 June) symbolising soldiers, police, officials and civilians. Instead of royal or Buddhist imagery, bas-reliefs depict armed revolution, the People's Party and labourers, all in the muscular, 'heroic worker' style typical of mid 20th-century monuments worldwide.
