I. INTRODUCTION
This article is written with the aim to describe
experiences in using Skype in language teaching. One of
the authors is a teacher of English and has been working
in this field for fifteen years. The other author has had
long-standing experiences in online and distance learning
in higher education. There are multiple forms of teaching
English, ranging from the traditional frontal teaching
method in a large class (used mostly in traditional primary
and secondary education), over working as a monitor in a
small group (among others, used in adult groups teaching
English for special purposes, such as banking English) to
one-to-one teaching, such as in tutoring or private classes.
All forms of language teaching have their advantages and
disadvantages, both from the teacher’s as well as from the
student’s point of view. In some settings the teacher is
granted more freedom to create their own ideal teaching
environment, as in the case of tutoring or giving private
classes, while in state-funded primary and secondary
eduation the language teacher is more likely to rely on
traditional teaching methods.
