Concise Oxford Dictionary defines a hybrid as ‘a word formed from elements [such as roots, affixes or lexical items] taken from different languages’. Examples of commonly found hybrids in English are ‘speedometer’ (English+Greek), ‘Beatle-mania (English+Greek) and ‘kitchenette’ (English+French). A number of hybrids can be found in Thai, too, amongst which are the Thai words for ‘bus’, ‘video’, ‘bread’ and ‘disc’.
