For machining processes, there is a lack of system-level models and mathematical tools to understand variation propagation so as to support fully integration of design, manufacturing, and quality improvement. As such, the tolerance stackup is not well-understood at design stage. The lack of models describing the overall machining processes also imposed a large constraint on developing advanced diagnostics for manufacturing. Statistical Process Control more focuses on manufacturing process monitoring, as opposed to balanced studies on process monitoring and fast root cause identification. As a result, a large number of iterative design changes and human interventions are required due to a poor system response to uncertainty.
