The main, and often the only,
compound synthesized by yeasts, is MGG (Sommaruga et al.,
2004). The presence ofMGG in yeasts, in particular those that
also produce carotenoid pigments (carotenogenic yeasts), is
restricted to certain phylogenetic groups, given that certain
taxa are unable to produce them (Libkind et al., 2005).
Libkind et al. (2005) reported that carotenogenic yeast species
of the Sporidiobolales (Pucciniomycotina) and Cystofilobasidiales
(Agaricomycotina) orders were nonmycosporinogenic.
However, in the latter taxonomic group, only species of the
genus Cystofilobasidium were studied.
