Project Phase 1 of Semester 1/2015 Airlines
Description
Majestic International Airways (MIA) is company based in Singapore with a major branch in
Bangkok. Established in 1998, it has grown to be a major service provider for travelers in
Asia and Pacific. MIA boasts of a fleet of over 125 airplanes offering an average of 54 flights
per day connecting 61 cities in the region, with major hubs in Singapore, Bangkok and
Melbourne.
Recently, to gain an edge on other competing airlines, MIA launched a program to provide
free airport pickup service to customers from/to major cities. In each major city, luxury vans
have been acquired and drivers hired to fulfill this promised incentive. Initially, this
program became a huge success as customers found this value-added service very attractive
and more passengers chose to travel MIA. However, as the volume of customers using this
service increased, complaints started to pile up on each Airport pickup Manager’s desk in
various cities. Major issues ranged from delay in pickup to totally missing out on an
arranged pickup. The current procedure required the customer to mention where and when
to pickup during confirmation of the airline ticket. However, these conversations are mostly
phone based and MIA staff either completely forget to fill out requests and fax it to the
appropriate city or details filled out are not accurate.
Given the initial success of the program and the large investments, MIA is reluctant to scrap
it completely. To compensate for the mistakes committed by MIA, the customers are being
offered future discounts of airline tickets, VIP lounge memberships etc. However, this is not
seen as a long term solution and MIA is desperate to rectify the situation as soon as possible.
Mission
Your team has been hired by MIA to propose a cost-effective, feasible and
comprehensive IT based solution that not only solves the problems as described, but to also
create new business opportunities for MIA, if possible.
