Longest Buffet to Mark HM’s Accession Anniversary
AP-THE world’s longest buffet will stretch out for more than one and a half kilometers on Phuket island on December 5 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the accession of the world’s longest reigning monarch, King Bhumibol Adulyadej.
All of Phuket’s 75 hotel, along with 20 restaurants, will contribute to the 1,509 meters spread of the international goodies at the popular Patong Beach, the organizers said recently. It will be held on the King’s 68 birthday. The number 1,509 wasn’t chosen at random. The one means the King has ruled longer than any other monarch alive. Fifty is the number of year he will have been on the throne by next June. And he is the 9th King of the Chakri Dynasty.
The head of the project, hotel executive Pramook Achariyachai, said the current buffet record, 1,384 meters, was set in Malaysia last year. Officials from the Guinness Book of World Records will be in Phuket to verify a new entry, Pramook said.
Pramook said 25,000 buffet tickets will be sold at 300 baht piece, and several companies are contributing money as sponsors. The expected proceeds of about one million baht will be donated to the King. “We would like to make Phuket the place for good hotels and good food,” he said. The project is being organized by the Tourism Authority of Thailand and the Hotel Association in Phuket.
