Probably best known for being the creator of peanut butter, George Washington Carver is actually considered the "Black Leonardo," a reference to famed inventor and artist, Leonardo da Vinci. Carver cleverly developed and promoted tons of household products like cosmetics, dyes and plastics which he created using alternatives to cotton like nuts and beans. He earned himself many honours and medals throughout his life for his research.
Doctor CarverHe was born a slave in Missouri sometime in January 1864 and when he was only a week old he, his mother and his sister were kidnapped by night raiders. His owner, Moses Carver worked hard to get them back, but only managed to retrieve George.
A few years later when slavery was abolished, the Carvers raised George and his brother as their own children. This is how George learned to read and write and though there were no schools which allowed black children nearby, George traveled ten miles away to attend one that was specifically for black children. Carver ended up applying for college as well and was accepted to Highland College in Kansas, but his admission was revoked when they discovered that he wasn't white.
In 1888, Carver finally got the educated he sought for when he obtained a educational bank loan and went to study piano at Simpson college in Iowa. A teacher encouraged him to pursue his hobby and interest in botany and he eventually graduated with a B.S., then went on to achieve a Masters as well.
Scientific ExperimentHe started becoming a household name when he introduced the concept of rotating crops in order to introduce more nitrogen to the soil. This would result in improved soils which had been depleted by constant cotton crops. With the rotation of crops, not only was the soil improved, but it allowed farmers to grow and sell a variety of products like sweet potatoes and legumes which were also nutritious. Carver even began a program that provided help and assistant to farmers who were rotating their crops as well as healthy recipes for families to try.
Carver also founded an industrial research laboratory where he and his assistants worked hard to popularize the new crops by finding multiple uses for them, particularly peanuts. His work with peanuts and uses for peanuts helped him become famous across the country with the top farmers, politicians and celebrities turning to him for advice. He greatly enjoyed his fame and continued to work to find more and more uses for peanuts which are still popular today until
