SET-listed Bangkok Airways (BA) is on course to beat its full-year revenue and net profit growth targets of 10-15% despite tough competition.
The airline is confident of achieving its passenger volume target of 5.4 million this year, up from 4.7 million last year, president Puttipong Prasarttong-Osoth said.
First-half passenger numbers reached 2.6 million.
During that same period, Bangkok Airways posted a net profit of 900 million baht, a sharp rise from 200 million a year earlier, as political stability took hold.
"For the final six months, which is a high season for tourism, the airline has already secured bookings of nearly 1 million tickets, almost 20% of its estimated passenger volume," Mr Puttipong said.
The airline also plans to expand its Asean network over the next three to five years with a focus on its strength: short- and medium-haul flights of five hours or less.
Mr Puttipong discussed the airline's business plan at a time of strong competition, especially regarding aggressive low-cost carriers (LCCs) invading the short- and medium-haul space.
The emerging LCCs have caused headaches for full-service airlines such as Bangkok Airways.
Mr Puttipong confirmed some routes would need to be axed, especially domestic flights, while new destinations would have to be added to fill in the missing links in the regional network.
The airline elected to give up its route from Bangkok to the northeastern province of Udon Thani, saying it was unable to compete with low-cost flights.
Future plans call for further routes in major cities to ensure a vast coverage network in Southeast Asia.
Bangkok Airways has moved to secure its position in the region with a new route, Bangkok to Danang, Vietnam.
The carrier will also seek to strengthen its network, which has allowed it to rely on passenger feeds from 20 international code-share partners, the most of any airline in Thailand.
It is also negotiating with three more potential partners — Austrian Air, China Eastern Airlines and Korean Air. Another code-share partner in the Philippines is also in negotiations. All the agreements...
Back at home, Bangkok Airways will spend 1 billion baht to build its own aircraft repair depot at Suvarnabhumi airport, covering 8,000 square metres, and another 1 billion for renovating and expanding...
The airline will increase its Bangkok-Koh Samui flights to nine a day from eight, Phuket-Koh Samui to six a day from five and Bangkok-Phuket to nine a day from eight.
BA shares closed yesterday on the Stock Exchange of Thailand at 20.70 baht, up 30 satang, in trade worth 93.3 million baht.
