As I fiddled with my necklace on the way to the bathroom, Toby Jenkins one of my good friends from middle school stopped to talk to me.
“Hey Soph.” He said smiling.
“Oh hey Toby.” I replied.
We made casual conversation for a while until he asked me about who I was going with to prom.
“Oh...I don’t really know, how about you?” I asked taken aback.
“Well, I was actually thinking of asking you.” He said sheepishly. “I mean I know we don’t really hang out and haven’t really spoken since middle school, but I thought that it could be nice maybe? I don’t know maybe I’m just being stupid or something.”
“Oh wow, um that’s really nice of you Toby, but...”
I watched as his face grew in disappointment.
“But...?”
“I don’t know, I guess I’m just not up to it at the moment. I’m really sorry Toby.”
“That’s cool, I guess I’ll just see you round.” He said as he walked off.
God feeling shitty within myself was bad enough, but making poor Toby feel shitty as well was even worse. I watched as he walked away, feeling the guilt drip off my skin.
