In the interactive condition, the infant sat on the floor directly in front of the
experimenter. The experimenter obtained the attention of the infant and then said,
“[Infant’s name], I’m going to show you how this works, okay?” During this phase, the
experimenter made eye contact with the infant and maintained his or her attention.
Once the infant was attending, the experimenter either pressed the doorbell with her
elbow or illuminated the light with her forehead. Throughout the demonstration, the
demonstrator maintained the infant’s attention by making eye contact with him or her
and using the infant’s name. Immediately following this demonstration, the
experimenter repeated the action, again maintaining the infant’s attention. Once the
demonstration had been performed on the object, the caregiver said, “[Infant’s name],
can you show me how this works?” This was repeated for the other object.
