The absolutist response to this charge is that mathematics is objective and neutral and value-free. Any so called ‘values’ implicit in mathematics do not represent choices or preferences but are essential to the nature of the enterprise. mathematics is the science of the abstract, the formal and the objective, it is primarily concerned with generality, with theory and with justification. Of itself, mathematics has no social preferences. It just so happens that certain sectors of the population, namely whites, males and members of the middle-classes are intrinsically better equipped for the demands of mathematical values. Furthermore, according to this perspective, this is supported by historical evidence, since virtually all great mathematicians have belonged to this group.
