To address these questions, the academic records of students who took the writing
proficiency test at GSU in 1991 were analyzed. Academic profiles of students
who had not yet passed the writing examination by the end of 1994 were
developed using the official university records for these students. An academic
profile as developed for this study includes the student’s linguistic and cultural
background, prior education (e.g., high school or university, U.S. or foreign),
courses taken at GSU, academic majors, and cumulative GPA at GSU.
