The classification of soils was based on some morphological criteria that were observed
directly in the field by the field team. However the classification system is also based on some
chemical criteria, which cannot be observed in the field but analysed in soil samples brought
to the SSLCC in Dok Dong. Thus, the team has sampled about 13 pits in each of the villages
Nambo and Namonua with samples from 2-4 soil horizons in each pit. In addition, they have
taken an about equal number of auger samples but only for the topsoil 0 – 13 cm. A big
number of chemical analyses were done, partly to support the classification, partly to give
additional information on nutrient availability. It seems that SSLCC has done a
comprehensive and excellent work in this field. The classification is still a bit tentative and a
slight revision of standpoints was needed.
