Philosophy
Regardless of their level of training or certifications, midwives tend to share the same philosophy about childbirth. They tend to focus on the natural aspects of pregnancy and childbirth. They often spend more time talking with patients than doctors do, helping them understand and cope with emotional issues and listening to the patients' instincts on how the pregnancy is progressing. They aren't resistant to referring the patient to a doctor if testing or medication is needed, but they don't usually perform many tests, although they'll use basic equipment such as a fetal Doppler to listen to a baby's heartbeat.
