Finally, the survey explicitly considered spillover effects of
FT and Utz engagements toward other aspects of rural livelihood strategies (i.e., changes in crops choice, adjustments in
labor use within/outside the household) and externalities of
certification that might accrue to all households in the community (related to premium use and changes in regional coffee or
labor markets). Combining all these aspects into an integrated
approach permits us to generate simultaneously insights into
the effectiveness and constraints of targeting efficiency (i.e.,
inclusion of the poor households and possible leakages to
the non-poor), as well as the broader socio-economic implications of certification at different scale levels (e.g., individual,
household, farmers’ organization and village/region)
