For several decades, incubators have been supporting the creation of startup companies. With the Internet and the New Economy, a breed of incubators emerged that was characterized by a different momentum, and which came under severe pressure with the market correction in March 2000. Since then, incubator managers, entrepreneurs, corporate and independent venture capitalists, institutional investors, as well as public administrators are questioning the validity of the incubator business model, and incubators are challenged to find a watertight approach to ensure long-term success and sustainability.
