The main economic activity of the communities in the project area is agriculture, primarily for household consumption. Rice is the main staple, grown both on paddy and on upland areas. After the rice crop, short-season crops are grown, with maize, sugar cane, cassava, banana, pineapple among these crops. Many of the villagers grow vegetables along the Nam Ngoy and Nam Mang, on small fenced-off plots where the floodwaters do not quite reach, so water is easily available for the leafy vegetables. Some households also fence off small plots near their houses to grow vegetables as they do alongside the river, but even more so the households have wooden trays in which they grow vegetables, herbs and spices. These trays are one to three square meters in size, and are raised up so they are out of reach of the farm animals.
