An explosion at an Alberta Gas Trunk pipeline near Edson killed eight men and injured four other workers.
William Bolt, superintendent of pipeline operations for Piggot Pipelines Ltd., said the explosion occurred on a lateral line about 50 kilometres northwest of Edson.
He said about 180 metres of the 50-centimetre-diameter line was "ripped to pieces" by the blast.
The feeder line was part of a system being built to provide natural gas to Alberta, British Columbia and the United States.
The injured men were taken to hospitals in Edson and Edmonton.
Survivors Earl Westman and Pierre Gagne were standing beside a Caterpillar tractor about 15 metres from the pipeline.
"All of a sudden, there was blast. It knocked me flat on the ground. Pierre was blown up against the tractor," West-man said.
"There was fire all around and we crawled on our hands and knees through a living hell to get away from the blast area."
The two men flew to Edmonton to assist RCMP in the identification of the bodies.
RCMP also had to check time sheets, and hotel and boarding house registers, in an effort to identify the dead.
