Vitamin E (a-tocopherol) in serum was assayed by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC)
with fluorescence detection as described earlier (7). Lipid peroxidation in plasma was measured by
determining TBARS, as the concentration of malondialdehyde, by HPLC as described by Wong et
al (8). After blood sampling, 2 mL of plasma was immediately mixed with 20 PL of 5 % butylated
hydroxytoluene in ethanol and then stored at -70” until assayed.
Plasma lipids were extracted with chloroform/methanol as described elsewhere (8). The
phospholipids were separated by thin-layer chromatography and after transmethylation the fatty acid
methyl esters were separated by gas-liquid chromatography. The results are given as area percentage
of all fatty acids detected.
Glucose in plasma was assayed immediately after blood sampling with a glucose oxidase method.
