For its part, economic abuse is defined by the law as “refers to acts that make or attempt to make a woman financially dependent”.
Also notable is the definition of Battered Woman Syndrome in section 3 of the law and the rendering of the same as a defense under section 26. Section (3) provides: ["Battered Woman Syndrome" refers to a scientifically defined pattern of psychological and behavioral symptoms found in women living in battering relationships as a result of cumulative abuse.] A woman determined by a psychiatrist/psychologist as one suffering from the above-mentioned syndrome is generally exempt from criminal and civil liability when she has to defend herself.
