2.3. Enzyme assays
The enzyme preparations contained 2.0, 6.0, 20.0, 2.0
and 2.0 IU/ml ®lter paper (FP-ase), carboxymethyl cellulase
(CMC-ase), xylanase, b-glucosidase and b-xylosidase
activities, respectively. The enzyme activities were
determined according to standard assay conditions. FP
hydrolyzing activity and Endo-1,4-b-D-glucanase were
measured by the method of Mandels et al. (1976). Endo-
1,4-b-D-xylanase activity was assayed according to
Bailey et al. (1992). b-glucosidase and b-xylosidase activities
were determined after Grajek (1987). One IU of
cellulase or xylanase was de®ned as the amount of enzyme
that releases 1 lmol of sugars or para-nitrophenol
equivalents per millilitre of enzyme preparation per
minute of enzyme assay.
