3. Results and discussion
Modular systems engineering models of the microalgae to
biofuel process were leveraged to perform a LCA of two different
thermochemical conversion pathways at two different scales,
small- and industrial-scale. The small-scale system is based on
the experimental systems used for process demonstration and
evaluation. The industrial-scaled system is representative of industrial
function through the inclusion of energy recovery through
techniques previously discussed, system optimization, and subprocess
co-location, and includes experimental results in terms
of defining pyrolysis and HTL function.
