Any stud of the mass media, implicitly or otherwise, is concerned with their role in contemporary society public interest. Any media transformation can be assessed in terms of its contribution to processes of demcratization-in providing a forum for informing citizens; or, onthe other hand, in serving the interests of the state for control or corporate capital for profit. For Graham Murdock this is the key question to ask of any communications medium. In Chapter 2, in relation to both early boradcasting and developments in contemporary media,he examines the relationship of the communications environment to communicative and cultural rights.
