3.2.2. Eggs
A total of 199 egg samples were collected and tested for the
presence ofSalmonella, with results summarised in Table 3. The
majority of the egg samples were caged eggs (57% of all samples),
followed by free range eggs (31%) and barn laid eggs (12%). A total of
seven of 199 (3.5%) egg samples were positive forSalmonellaon the
outside of the egg only. A higher percentage of positive samples were
identified in the caged eggs at 5.3% (6 of 113), compared to free range
eggs at 1.6% (1 of 62). There was no significant difference between the
rate of Salmonellapositive eggs for caged compared to free range
(Fisher's exact, P =0.424). No egg contents were positive for
Salmonella
