Table 15-5 contains the responses regarding the services provided by the departments. Traditional tasks of the departments, such as preventive and corrective maintenance, equipment inventory, acceptance testing, and repurchase consultation (including market survey, development of specifications, evaluation of tenders, and final selection), management of service contracts, and education and training, are performed by a large portion of the departments. However, tasks such as risk management, quality control, and research and development are still not so widely offered. Under “other,” departments reported such responsibilities as government activities, project management, administration, consultation, and parts sourcing. An attempt was also made to identify the distribution of tasks between engineers and BMETs. It was found that in the majority of departments, where both engineers and BMETs exist, repurchase consultation (with the four sub stages), management of service contracts, risk management, quality control, education and training, and research and development, are mainly performed by engineers, while preventive and corrective maintenance are predominantly responsibility of BMETs. Equipment inventory and acceptance testing are shared between both professionals. It is important to note however that there is overlapping of roles in performing the tasks to a very high degree.
