Once the students understand the problem, it's time for them to devise their own plans for solving it. This is a time for students to work on their own. The teacher walks around the room, allowing students to come up with ideas on their own, offering hints to students who are stuck, and encouraging students who have come up with a solution to think of other possible ways of solving the problem. The teacher then gives the students that come up with the typical methods of solving the problem a small chalkboard (or poster paper, board, etc.) so that they can write out their solution large enough for presentation to the rest of the class to see.
