It was a cold dark night and Carol was lost. Tom checked the time. It was an hour later since Carol had gone.
He got up and went down into the kitchen and drank a glass of water. The telephone rang. He ran to it and answered.
He spoken with Carol's workplace. They had phoned earlier asking if she had come home yet. He had told them no' at the time. They told his how a lady at work got injured and she went to drop her home, but Carol should have been back a long time ago. He was surprised. He had hung up and called Carol about three times.
He had waited home with the phone next to his on the sofa.
He yawned, suddenly realizing how tired he was. Tom climbed the stairs to his room. Throwing himself on the bed, Tom sang himself to sleep in the silence of the night.
The time was 7:30 on a Monday morning. The sunlight filtered through the window.
Tom went down the stairs and there was no Carol in sight. He looked out into the yard. Still no sign of Carol. Her Volvo wasn't parked there either. Maybe she went to the grocery to come back, he thought. Pouring himself a cup of coffee, he switched on the television set to the news,
The announcer's said , A woman has crashed along the Bypass in lower early this morning while driving her 1991 Volvo.
"CAROL!!!!!" Tom grabbed his keys and headed out the door. He raced to the main road.
She opened the door and ran breathlessly toward the police vehicles and ambulance, and not to mention the large crowd that surrounded them. She pushed past him and ran to the ambulance.
Tom looked into her eyes and nodded.Tom swept to her side and caressed her head in his hands. He kissed her just in time to hear her last breath. Carol was dead, right in front of his.
It was four days later and Tom was at Carol' funeral. He looked at the full congregation in front of him. There were sad faces. Tom talked about Carol' life and their marriage. He talked of the good things.
Then he began. You may wonder why I am not crying. I am sad, yes. But Carol; presence is all around us. She taught me that the days will be long and hard, the nights will be dark and lonely, but she will still be by my side, even her soul. People, who are gathered here today, never resist a moment to tell your loved ones that you love them. I LOVE YOU ALL!!
