Patients of both genders were included in the trial if they
were above 40 years of age with clinical evidence con-
firming diagnosis of knee OA. The duration of pain was at
least 6 months on majority of days during the precedingmonths and showing radiological evidence (tibiofemoral
osteophytes of at least 1 mm and Kellgren and Lawrence
grade 2 or 3) (Kellgren and Lawrence 1957) of OA Grade 2
[definite osteophytes, definite narrowing of joint space] and
Grade 3 [moderate multiple osteophytes, definite narrowing
of joints space, some sclerosis, and possible deformity
of bone contour]. Patients with concurrent medical or
arthritic conditions confounding evaluation of the knee
OA, primary predominant patella-femoral disease, history
of clinically significant trauma/surgery to the affected
knee, and co-existing disease that could preclude the successful
completion of the trial were excluded from the trial.
