Landscape Analysis
Changes in land use in the study area were evident between the years 1998 and 2004 (Table 1), with areas of farming land decreasing by 24% (103.8 ha), while forests and the neighbouring woods and parks decreased by 9% and 11% respectively. By comparison, areas of uncultivated land increased by 45% (19.3 ha). Similarly, construction areas increased. For example, the number of detached house areas in suburbs increased tenfold while their total area increased by 42% (56.8 ha) (Table 1). Similarly, the area occupied by blocks of flats almost trebled (33.2 ha). Over the same time period, the road network also developed further.
