A particular strength of this study was the large sample of
homes that participated in the survey. However, we cannot
rule out response bias, and it is likely that homes with very
poor knowledge or practices around infection control were
under-represented. The response rate was higher for nursing
(50%) than for residential homes (36%), possibly because
nursing homes saw the topic as more relevant. Social desirability
bias may have been an issue, although anonymizing
the results should have helped to minimize this
