exposure, canacclimatetoarangeoflightregimens.Wehypothesisedthatthegrowthandphysiological
performance dependsonthetotalamountoflightreceivedbytheplantperdayandonthetemporal
order ofdiurnalvariationsinthelightsupply.Thebiomassaccumulationandallocationandthekey
photosynthetic traitsofpot-growncoffeeseedlingswereexaminedoverarangeoflighttreatments
as follows:plantsgrownentirelyunder100%,40%or10%sunlight;plantsgrownateither40%or10%
sunlight fromsunrisetomiddayandthensubmittedtofullsunlightuntilsunset;andplantsgrownunder
full sunlightfromsunrisetomiddayandthensubmittedtoeither40%or10%sunlightthroughoutthe
afternoon. Thetotalbiomassincreasedlinearlywiththeincreasingtotallightsupply;however,plants
receiving highamountsoflightinthemorninggrewmorethanthosereceivinghighamountsoflightin
the afternoon.Extensivemorphologicalchanges(e.g.,specificleafareasandleafarearatios)primarily
responsive tototallightratherthandiurnallightfluctuationsorlightquality,atagivenlightsupply,were
noted. Incontrast,changesinthephotosyntheticperformanceperunitleafareaamongthetreatments
were narrowerandapparentlyunrelatedtocarbohydrateaccumulationorphotoinhibition.Overall,we
found apoorleaf-levelphysiologicalplasticityoftraitstolight.Wesuggestthatadjustmentsinleaf
number andleafarea,coupledwithwhole-plantphysiologicaladjustments,couldlargelyaccountfor
the differencesinthebiomassamongsttreatments.Wealsosuggestthatcoffeecouldbeclassifiedasa
shade-tolerant speciesasitstraitsdonotmatchtherequirementsofeitheraclassicshade-avoidingora
classic shade-demandingspecies.
