Boris went on to become a writer and dedicated a book to the woman he had married as a young soldier, hoping that perhaps Anna would see it, though she never did. When the Soviet Union dissolved, Anna was once again permitted to travel and she moved back to her home village. It was there that Anna caught sight of an elderly man climbing out of a car.
"I thought my eyes were playing games with me," Anna said. "I saw this familiar-looking man approaching me, his eyes gazing at me. My heart jumped. I knew it was him. I was crying with joy."
Boris has been visiting the village to pay respects at his parents' grave when he noticed a woman standing in front of the house that he and his wife had lived in for those three brief days sixty years before. He was sure it was her and quickly went over to her, saying, "Darling, I've been waiting for you for so long." They stayed up all night talking about what had happened over the years. They realized that they were still head over heels in love.
