The mucilage extracted from tamarind (T. indica) seeds, was used for the removal of vat and direct dye in aqueous solution [26]. The maximum removal obtained was 60% for golden yellow after 2 h and 25% for direct fast scarlet after 1 h. The optimum mucilage dose was 10 mg/l and 15 mg/ l for golden yellow and direct fast scarlet, respectively. Following their successful results with tamarind, Mishra et al. [29] used ceric ion initiated polymerization to obtain acrylamide (PAM)-grafted mucilage. The grafted copolymer showed better results for dye removal. The optimal flocculant concentration was independent of dye concentration within the concentration range examined. Both the grafted and ungrafted flocculants performed better for removal of azo dyes than for reactive and basic dyes.
