We never store explosives on the site. They are brought to the site every day in a special truck. We must keep the explosives and the detonators separate at all times. The explosive we use looks like a long brown cable. It's about 1 cm thick. I have to cut each length to fit the holes in the pillars and walls. I cut it to the length I need, using a sharp knife. Next I tape up the cut ends and fix a detonator to the explosive. The explosive and detonator are then placed into the hole. On the end of each detonator is a yellow tube - 'a shock tube'. This tube is left sticking out of the hole, ready to connect into the system. Then all the holes are filled up with quick-drying cement. This is good fun - a bit like using play-dough.
