Utilizing a statistical mediation approach, we found that
MBCT and MBSR participants’ formal (but not informal,
or total) mindfulness practice was associated with
decreased rumination, which was, in turn, associated with
significant reductions in depressive symptoms. Our results
demonstrate that, during formal meditation practice, shifting
one’s attention to their present moment experience can
help an individual to disengage from problematic ruminative
thought processes.
