Following this, there is support for human intervention to change the Earth for the benefits of the present and future human beings (Sarkar, 2012). Instead of conserving as much as possible for future generations, human intervention could be directed to consume current resources in order to ameliorate the livelihoods of future generations. Relying chiefly on a genetic justification, this position argues that our quality of life today is much improved only because our ancestors dared to modify their environment with the aim of improving lives (Sarkar, 2012: 162). As an iconic example of environmental modification for present and future good, the Semakau Landfill appears to be justified by this position.
