Dietary carbohydrate intake is the primary determinant of blood glucose values, and evidence suggests that the quantity, and perhaps quality, of carbohydrate sources can influence metabolic response to a weight loss diet in diabetes management (26,27). The lower and higher carbohydrate diets studied in this trial are both within the range of recommended intake. The moderately reduced level of carbohydrate intake examined as an exploratory aimin this study is likely to be sustainable, which is a concernwith low-carbohydrate diets in both the general population (28,29) and patients with type 2 diabetes (11).
