A daily cycle of morning and evening prayer for ordinary people developed, only to disappear in most parts of the world in later centuries. Chrysostom advises Christians “in the church at dawn to make your prayers and confessions” and for each one to return in the evening to “beg forgiveness for his falls.” Egeria tells us of a series of daily prayer in Jerusalem with some hours for the monks and virgins and others for the clergy and lay people.
